Prostate Disorders

Prostate problems can’t wait

Prostate problems strike 90% of all men. In 2005, more than 250,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Unfortunately, many were “too busy” to get an exam. If you are a male over 50, we recommend a visit to the Prostate Center of Monterey for an examination, P.S.A. test  and to schedule annual screenings to avoid prostate problems. New techniques to perform prostate biopsies without pain and better accuracy are utilized. We have access to the latest surgical and robotic procedures as well as access to the most advanced radiation treatment facility available in our area.

Know the signs of a potential prostate problem:

  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Inability to urinate
  • Urges to urinate that wake you at night
  • Having to urinate often
  • Still feeling “natures call” even after you’ve urinated
  • Low back pain or “achiness” in the pelvis or upper thighs

Enlarged Prostate – BPH

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a localized enlargement of the prostate gland in aging adult men. It affects approximately 50% of men over the age of 50, and up to 90% of men over 80. This excess growth of tissue compresses and obstructs the urethra, reducing the flow of urine from the bladder and sometimes blocking it entirely. As the symptoms increase, they can greatly impact a man’s quality of life.

It is not currently known why the prostate continues to grow for the majority of men beyond middle age; however, over time, this enlargement often pushes in on the urethra, which will eventually reduce the flow of urine. Patients also feel the need to go to the bathroom more often or feel like their bladder is not fully emptying. Over time, if not treated, the bladder will become thickened as it tries to force the urine through the urethra, which may make it less flexible and more irritable. It is important to talk to your urologist and try to resolve your BPH before this occurs as it may become more difficult over time to reverse the symptoms you are experiencing.
